Australian PM Howard Welcomes Iraqi Kurdish leader Talabani

 

Canberra – 21st August 2003
 

The Prime Minster  of Australia John Howard warmly welcomed the Kurdish leader Jalal Talabani and his delegation in Australia's capital Canberra today. Prime Minister Howard reaffirmed Australia’s commitment to assisting in development of a new democratic government in Iraq.

  

 

After expressing his condolences for the deplorable acts of terror that led to the death of UN Special Representative to Iraq Sergio Demello, Mr. Howard congratulated Jalal Talabani for the historic steps that have been taken in the formation of the Iraqi Governing Council.  The Prime Minister assured Talabani that Australia would continue to support the political and physical reconstruction of Iraq while at the same work to ensure greater stability in the country.

 

Talabani thanked the Prime Minster on behalf of the Iraqi and Kurdish people for Australia’s role in the liberation of Iraq, and for their commitment to the reconstruction of the country.  He said “The Kurdish and Iraqi people are a faithful people, and they will remember those that helped them during the difficult period”.

During his tour of Australia, Talabani has also met with the Attorney General Darryl Williams, Minister of Defence Robert Hill, Minister of Trade Mark Vaile, Minster of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Warren Truss and the Minster of Immigration and Multi Cultural Affairs Mr. Phillip Ruddock.  The purpose of the official visit has been to consult with top Australian officials to strengthen the partnership between the Kurdish, Iraqi and Australian people and to encourage Australian investment in the reconstruction of Iraq.

 

Talabani was also given a very warm reception and special acknowledgment of his presence at today’s Parliamentary Session of Question Time where the Speaker of the House, Prime Minster and the leader of the opposition warmly welcomed Talabani and his delegation.
